Me and Tyler have really enjoyed coming to derwent hill. The death swing was awesome but gave us butterfly's, we have both been mountain walking all day. On day 2 we went gorge walking we got absolutely drenched. On the night we did nightline together Tyler ended up hugging a tree. We had a fire alarm at half seven in the morning :(. Once we got to the top of the mountain we were all tired thankfully there was an ice cream shop at the bottom of the mountain so it carried us on as we walked down sadly we got down and it was closed.

Hello Mam and Dad it can't wait to see you! The best bit was the gorge walking (we got hot chocolate) and the death swing. We have walked a mountain and it was really windy and did rock climbing. I am having lots of fun. we have done lots incredible things the best thing I done was the death swing it was really scary and fun when you jumped of the high platform I was shaking thinking the rope was going to snap we also went gorge walking I saved someone from the water fall it was flowing really fast we went in the deep dark mine it was pitch black when we turned our torches of we done the low ropes corse and my partner fell of constantly we went on a huge walk it was everlasting its been great cant wait to see you's

Missing you all loads! We have had a fantastic time. I went on the death swing but it took some encouraging from the others! We have also been gorge walking, it was freezing cold but I survived ( wait til you see the bruises on my legs off the rocks!) Today we did orienteering and we went in a mine. I have some rocks which have some lead in for you all! It was sooooo fun! Will tell you more about it when I get home. Tomorrow we might be either canoeing or the death swing. Day Three
Perhaps we spoke too soon about the sunny weather yesterday - it has rained ALL day today! However this has not dampened our spirits and Year 5 have had another amazing day. The children have taken part in all activities with enthusiasm and are doing BB proud!
Miss Best's group set off on an all-day mountain walk. The start of the walk was tough as the route was very steep. We learned so much along the way! Miss Best was very happy that we saw the water cycle in action (something we studied in school just last week). The children impressed the guide with their knowledge of evaporation, condensation and precipitation. Once we reached "Surprise View" we stopped for lunch (still in the rain). On the way back down the mountain we saw lots of interesting things including frogspawn, a sheep's skeleton and some baby lambs (with waterproof coats)! After a quick break for hot chocolate (in the rain), we finally made it back to the bottom. Here we shared our favourite parts of the trip and the guide congratulated the group on their effort and enthusiasm.
Mrs Norton's group also completed an all day mountain walk. The beginning was very tricky as we had to walk up a very steep hill. However, we all managed. We also discussed the water cycle and Nick (our group leader) was really impressed by our knowledge. We continued to climb even though the wind was blowing in our faces. We still managed to view some spectacular sights but not as many as we had hoped. When we eventually reached the top of Walla Crag it was extremely windy and we had to hang onto each other. Everyone felt very proud of themselves as they had managed to get to the top in very severe weather. We ate our lunch inside a dome shaped wind shelter and then began our journey back down the other side of the mountain. The sun did appear briefly and dried us off slightly. We learned lots of new things like moss only grows in moist areas and 1000 years ago a huge glacier carved out the landscape. Nearing the bottom of the mountain we were delighted when we spotted a cafe and were allowed to go inside. Nick thought we would all get hot chocolate as it was so cold, wet and windy outside, but because we are children we all got ice cream!!! We were exhausted by the time we walked all the way back to Derwent Hill. Even though it was difficult we were all proud of ourselves and so were Nick and Mrs Norton.
Mrs Tyson's group braved the elements to conquer the famous death swing! We all had to face up to our fears to climb the vertical ladder to the top of the tree. We were securely fastened onto the rope by Tom (the instructor) who helped us walk anxiously to the end of the platform. The group started the countdown 5,4,3,2,1.... Then we jumped into the unknown and screamed! It was fantastic and we really enjoyed the challenge, well nearly everyone enjoyed the challenge. After lunch, orienteering was on the menu - we were given the task of finding clues and symbols around the inside of the building. It was really difficult but we worked together proving we could work as a team. Then we put our tomato suits (waterproofs) back on and explored the grounds to try and find the picture clues to help us solve the map. Maya and Emily were the champions finding all the clues first!
As you can see we've had another fantastic day, although we are missing the Year 5 boys back at school! We can't wait to catch up with everyone and tell you about our adventures!

Day Two
Another fantastic day at Derwent Hill! After a stormy night we weren't sure what to expect from the weather but we have been pleasantly surprised ... Lots of sunshine today made the activities even more enjoyable.
Each group completed different activities this morning. Mrs Tyson's group went rock climbing which involved climbing the crag face and touching the top with their noses! The children all did extremely well despite the gale force winds! Mrs Norton's group went on the death swing ... everyone was so brave and made the staff very proud. Miss Best's group went orienteering which involved hunting around the ground using maps. Everyone worked so hard in pairs and showed great teamwork.
After lunch all groups headed for the same activity ... Gorge walking! We all throughly enjoyed this!! The challenge here was to walk UP the river! The most important thing to remember was to always check behind to make sure your friends were ok and to check if they needed help. Year 5 were very good at this and we were very impressed with the support they gave each other. Along the way we braved racing currents, slippery rocks, splashing waterfalls, secret tunnels and wellies full of water! What a brilliant adventure!!
Once we had rested from the gorge walk, the Derwent Hill staff provided us with a delicious meal for tea. In order to burn off all of the extra calories, we then went on a Night Walk (check out the high visibility jackets). The children were in charge of reading a map to guide us along the walk. Amazingly along the way we saw Beatrix Potter's house! We could definitely see how she was inspired to write such brilliant books.
We are looking forward to another action packed day tomorrow. Hopefully we will keep you updated on our adventures, although connection to the Internet is proving quite difficult!
